playground: i know where the big girls go "In conjunction of the RGS 130th anniversary theme “Living the Legacy” with the RGS Arts Festival 2009, PLAYGROUND: I KNOW WHERE THE BIG GIRLS GO is a three panel monochrome work by artist Dawn Ng, featuring the Anderson campus as a playground for leagues of girls who grow up to become legends in their own right. By juxtaposing a visual confetti of school girls, icons, objects, secrets and myths, Dawn’s motive was to create a kaleidoscopic archive of the memories of all girls who’ve passed through it. As a ‘collective” project, Dawn turned PLAYGROUND into a large-scale community art movement involving RGS girls who were asked to submit personal photos and stories of the campus which hallmark their time there. Through grassroots word-of-mouth, pod casts, and posters fanning news about the project, the girls’ submissions swelled on a PLAYGROUND blog online http://www.ourprojectplayground.blogspot.com/. This landslide of real-life photos, objects and stories from the girls set the foundation from which PLAYGROUND has been constructed into a surreal collage landscape of the Anderson campus." |
